Appleton Police Department Chief of Police Polly Olson

The Illuminating Women art exhibition is a celebration of inspiring women who have made a lasting impact within their communities.

Through a collection of photography and biographical narratives, the exhibit honors trailblazers, caregivers, leaders, and everyday heroines whose courage, creativity, and resilience have shaped lives around them.  Each piece captures a unique journey, creating a tapestry of strength and hope that invites visitors to reflect on the enduring influence of women.  This week, we're highlighting the Appleton Police Department Chief of Police, Polly Olson.

Polly Olson

Polly Olson is the first female Chief of Police in Appleton, her hometown. After finishing her biology college degree, she worked for the coroner's office.  On a whim, she participated in a ride-along experience with the Appleton police and immediately knew she had found her calling. Already married with two young children, Polly embraced the challenge of juggling career and motherhood with great enthusiasm.  She thrives handling difficult situations, such as solving conflicts and supporting crime victims. Polly's care for her community is always at the forefront of her service. This includes fieldwork, crisis intervention, community engagement and leadership. Polly unwinds by tackling 1000-piece puzzles, reading, and walking with her husband.

Polly is comfortable in her own skin and appreciates her own worth. She knows that she has earned her place with grit and resilience. At the same time, Polly's humility and vulnerability are her superpowers, and she uses them wisely. For example, she shares her experience and lessons freely with her team and the community. She is also a great listener and keeps an open mind, which she learned from her mother. At any given time, she keeps her feet firmly on the ground and focuses on the things she can control, such as her care and compassion. Polly gives everyone her undivided attention, always hoping to help and bringing out the best in everyone.

Blazing the trail ahead, Polly is on a mission to support women in law enforcement. She always makes time for one-on-one meetings to help female colleagues navigate the challenges of the job. In addition, Polly is building a supportive network of policewomen and they bond over axe throwing or facials.  She hopes to inspire more women to join the police. Polly wishes for more peace in our world. She believes that we should not try to fit in but shine with our own strengths. For Polly, this means putting others first and focusing on the task at hand.
