Dreaded Life Question

Three years ago I wrote about my dreaded life question.

What do I want to be when I grow up?

I realized the importance of that original blog post while attempting to edit it.  That post is part of my story and I can't change it, so why try.  After reflecting on how far I’ve come in the last three years, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.

The reason I began The 100 Day Project of 100 Blog Posts in 100 Days is this.  I wanted to see what topics resonated with me most and if I could figure out what I'm supposed to be when I grow up.

This is where it began...

My dreaded life question, "What do I want to be when I grow up?"

I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up.  I knew I wasn't alone in this journey, but I didn't realize it until recently.   It's necessary to talk about it openly because I believe it's something so many of us struggle with.  I want to share my story and learn the stories of others.  At the age of 38, I finally realized it's not too late to answer this dreaded life question.  The time has come to figure things out and find some answers.

Today I begin The 100 Day Project.  The end result will be 100 blog posts in 100 days.  Hopefully, this will reveal some answers to my dreaded life question.

Fast forward three years...

The truth is, too many of us wrap our identities around what we do.

We shouldn't define ourselves by our careers or marital and family status.  Neither my career, nor my family look anything like I thought they would when I graduated from college nearly two decades ago.  While contemplating the life I'm currently living, I can't help but be grateful for how things turned out.  Everything seems to always work out in the end.  It's not perfect, but it's not supposed to be.

My mission is to live to my fullest potential by creating work that matters.  I believe this is what so many of us are searching for.

Much of the last two decades were spent wondering.

I often questioned whether I chose the right career path or if I was living to my fullest potential.  Finally, I understand each step of our journey is a stepping stone toward what comes next.  The key is to make progress, no matter how slow it may be.  This is how I define success.

For the longest time, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.

And, that's ok.  Even though I'm still figuring it out, I understand this is part of my story and I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.  Certainly, the next step in my journey will take me to an unpredictable and unexpected place.  Just like it has all my life, but I was too busy to see it.

Let's start a conversation about the dreaded life question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Self-help books continue to help me answer, "What do I want to be when I grow up."

I read several of Brené Brown's books and find her inspirational.  In addition to listening to both her TED talk and many of her interviews on multiple podcasts.  Her book Daring Greatly resonated with me the most.  She taught me endless lessons on whole-hearted living and cultivating creativity.
