Parasailing In Siesta Key Florida
Spring Break in Siesta Key and the Parasailing That Almost Wasn’t
Spring break with kids is always an adventure, but for me, this year’s trip came with an unexpected challenge: a brutal case of food poisoning, courtesy of a seemingly innocent plate of ahi tuna.
Let’s set the scene: a sunny beach, the sound of waves crashing, and a long-awaited family getaway to Siesta Key, Florida.

Midway through the week, I made the fateful decision to indulge in some fresh ahi tuna at a seaside restaurant.
By midnight, the reality hit hard. The nausea, chills, and stomach cramps felt like betrayal. Food poisoning is tough for anyone, but I couldn’t help but wonder if it was my autoimmunity that set the stage for this new level of misery.
While the rest of the family slept, I rode out the storm, alternating between the bathroom and a determination to somehow feel human again by morning. Why? Because the next day wasn’t just any day—it was the day our kids were going parasailing for the first time, and there was no way I was missing it.
Morning arrived, and of course, I was still weak. Common sense told me to stay in bed, but I decided to power through.

Feeling uneasy and weak, I stepped onto that boat.
As we cruised through Sarasota Bay, I began to feel more confident in my decision. After a quick safety briefing, the three of us were strapped into our harnesses. Before I knew it, the wind caught our parachute, lifting us effortlessly into the sky and I felt the nausea fade. The view was breathtaking and the moment was worth it.
When I looked over at two of my kids soaring through the air and their faces lit with pure joy, I knew I’d made the right decision. Sometimes, motherhood is about pushing through—through exhaustion, through discomfort, through moments when your body begs for a break.
Maybe this wasn’t the smartest decision, but it is one I’d make again in a heartbeat. After all, food poisoning fades. But the memories last forever.

Now let’s rewind to a recent post I wrote about Crohn’s Disease and autoimmunity.
I felt called to write about this experience because sometimes we might feel like we’re doing everything right, yet things still go wrong. I believe the food poisoning caused a flare-up with my Crohn’s Disease, and as a result, I am no longer in remission. This is important for me to note because I recently wrote about my experience using food as medicine. The food I consumed helped me into remission, but it also potentially caused a flare-up. Let this be a reminder to offer yourself some grace in the face of the unknown.
Serenity Prayer
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
