Seventeen years ago, I wandered the cobbled streets of Volendam, a charming Dutch fishing village nestled along the shores of the IJsselmeer. It was our honeymoon, a time of new beginnings, and with a camera in hand, I was ready to document the beauty of a place that seemed plucked from a painting.
I remember the boats swaying gently in the harbor, the cheerful clatter of wooden clogs, the neat rows of colorful houses with lace curtains in the windows.
Locals cycled past me with baskets of tulips, and the smell of freshly smoked eel lingered in the breeze. Every detail felt timeless, and through my lens, I attempted to capture the essence of a village suspended in its quiet rhythm.
Now, nearly two decades later, I find myself flipping through my photographs of Volendam.
The soft light of an overcast morning, spontaneous laughter captured outside a cheese shop, and the candid stillness of the water reflecting the sky. I smile not just because the images are beautiful, but because I wouldn’t change a thing about how I captured Volendam in 2018.
Back then, I didn’t fully realize it, but I was already becoming the artist I am today. I was following my instincts, seeing the world slowly and intentionally, even before I had the words for what that meant. My eye was already drawn to texture, shadow, quiet corners, and honest moments. It reminds me that sometimes, we’re walking our path long before we understand where it’s leading.
There’s comfort in knowing that our journey doesn’t always have to make sense in the moment. That the choices we make, the photographs we take, and the memories we preserve are threads in a much larger tapestry. Looking back at Volendam, I see not only a place I fell in love with, but an early version of myself who was already quietly committed to documenting life with intention.
