Finding Beauty in the Familiar: A Wisconsin Film Photographer’s Journey Through Devil's Lake State Park
As a travel photographer, it’s easy to believe the magic lies far from home, nestled in the cobbled corners of Europe or among the peaks of distant mountain ranges. But for me, a shift in perspective opened up an entirely new way of seeing the world. Hopping on a plane isn’t always necessary. A quick road trip to Devil's Lake State Park fulfilled my desire to create something meaningful.
What began as a passion for travel photography slowly transformed into a love for my home state of Wisconsin. Armed with a 35mm camera and a curious spirit, I began exploring Wisconsin with fresh eyes. From the rolling hills of the Driftless Area to the vast quiet of the Northwoods, from small towns with historic charm to the rocky bluffs overlooking crystal-clear lakes. Each photograph is a reminder that beauty isn’t reserved for far-off destinations.
There’s grace in a foggy morning over a cornfield, and in the colorful leaves that blanket Door County each fall.
My travels took me along the Mississippi River and across the shores of Lake Michigan. I began paying attention every day and started bringing my camera to the local farmer’s market, quiet lakeshores, and stunning state parks. In the Kettle Moraine hills, on the cliffs of Devil’s Lake State Park, and in the stillness of the Northwoods, I finally realized just how beautiful Wisconsin is.
These journeys throughout my home state have led me to believe that you don’t have to travel far and wide to experience awe. Sometimes, the most powerful inspiration is waiting just beyond your doorstep. Don’t overlook the familiar. Your own backyard might be the most meaningful place you’ll ever photograph. Sometimes, beauty isn’t waiting at the end of the runway; it’s just down the road.
